Rotate & Flip: how to use it

  1. Drop in your image.
  2. Choose a Turn of 90° right, 180° or 90° left, and tick Flip horizontal or Flip vertical if needed.
  3. For a crooked horizon, use Fine angle. Then download.

Tips

  • A fine angle leaves empty corners. Tick Transparent corners to keep them see-through, or pick a Corner colour, then trim them with the Image Cropper.
  • A photo that looks sideways on one device but not another usually has a rotation tag in its EXIF data. Rotating and saving it here fixes it everywhere.

Rotate & Flip: what it does and when to use it

Rotate & Flip handles the three things people mean by rotating a picture: quarter turns for photos that came out sideways, mirroring for selfies and text that reads backwards, and a fine angle for a horizon or a doorframe that is not quite level.

Quarter turns and flips move pixels without resampling, so they lose no detail. A fine angle has to resample, and a tilted picture no longer fills a rectangle: the canvas grows to hold it and the new corners are left transparent or filled with a colour you choose, ready to trim with the Image Cropper. Look for a long straight line that should be level, such as the sea, a table edge or a floor line, and turn until it is.

A photo that looks correct on your phone but sideways on a website usually has an orientation tag in its EXIF data that the site ignores. Saving a copy through this tool writes the pixels the right way round, which fixes it everywhere. Converging vertical lines on buildings are a perspective problem rather than a rotation one: use the Perspective Corrector for those.

Rotate & Flip: frequently asked questions

How do I rotate a picture that is sideways?

Use the quarter-turn buttons until it is upright and download. Photos often appear sideways because the camera saved its orientation as a tag some apps ignore; saving a rotated copy fixes it everywhere. Related tool: Image Cropper.

How do I flip a selfie that is mirrored?

Flip it horizontally and text in the picture reads the right way again. To make a symmetrical mirror effect from one half of a photo instead, use the Mirror Effect.

How do I straighten a crooked photo?

Turn it by a small angle until the horizon or a wall is level, then crop away the corners. For a photo of a page or building taken at an angle, the Perspective Corrector squares it up.
