Metadata Editor: how to use it

  1. Drop in a JPG photo. PNG and WebP store metadata differently and are not supported.
  2. Edit the fields: camera make and model, artist, copyright, description and date taken.
  3. Download the photo with the new metadata.

Tips

  • Adding your name in Artist and Copyright is an easy way to label photos you share or sell.
  • Many social media sites strip metadata on upload, so it will not always survive being posted.

Metadata Editor: what it does and when to use it

Photos from cameras and phones carry EXIF metadata: the camera make and model, the date and time taken, and fields for the artist, copyright and a description. The Metadata Editor lets you change those fields in a JPEG and download a copy with the new values.

Common uses are correcting a wrong date after a camera clock was never set, adding your name and a copyright notice to photos before sending them to clients, and writing a description that photo libraries and some search tools can read.

The editor supports JPEG only, because PNG and WebP store metadata differently. Changing metadata does not prove anything: EXIF is easy to edit, so it is not evidence of when or where a photo was taken. To remove metadata entirely before sharing, use the Metadata Remover, and to see everything a photo contains, including GPS, use the EXIF Viewer.

Metadata Editor: frequently asked questions

Is the Metadata Editor free, and do I need to sign up?

Yes, the Metadata Editor is 100% free with no sign-up, no login and no account. The Metadata Editor runs in your browser, so it has no daily limit and no upload, and saves at full size with no watermark. See why it is free.

How do I edit the date taken on a photo?

Open the JPEG, change the date and time field and download. Only the metadata changes; the image itself is not re-compressed.

How do I add my name and copyright to a photo?

Fill in the author and copyright fields before sharing the file. Many platforms strip metadata on upload, so add a visible mark as well with the Watermark Tool.

Can I edit the metadata of a PNG?

Editable EXIF is a JPEG feature. Convert to JPEG first with the Image Converter, or remove metadata from any format with the Metadata Remover.
