HEIC to JPG: what it does and when to use it
iPhones and iPads save photos as HEIC by default, a format that stores the same picture in noticeably less space than a JPEG. The catch is compatibility: many Windows programs, older Android phones, online forms and printing services still cannot open it. This converter decodes the HEIC in your browser with an open-source decoder and writes a standard JPEG that opens anywhere.
A quality of 90 keeps the result very close to the original; lower settings make a smaller file with more compression. Because the photo never leaves your device, it is a reasonable way to convert pictures of documents, IDs or children that you would rather not upload to an unknown converter site.
If you convert many photos regularly, it is easier to change the source: on an iPhone, Settings, then Camera, then Formats, then Most Compatible saves new photos as JPEG. Why can I not open HEIC files?
HEIC is the format iPhones use by default, and support outside Apple is patchy: Windows needs a codec from the Microsoft Store and many web forms reject it outright. Converting to JPEG makes the photo open anywhere, at the cost of a slightly larger file.
Can I stop my iPhone producing HEIC?
Yes. In Settings, Camera, Formats, choose Most Compatible and the camera records JPEG instead. You lose some of the storage saving but nothing else.
How do I convert HEIC to JPG on Windows?

Does converting HEIC to JPG reduce quality?
Very slightly, because JPG is also compressed, but at the default quality the difference cannot be seen. The JPG file will usually be larger than the HEIC, since HEIC compresses better.
