GIF Maker: how to use it
- Drop two or more images. They are ordered by file name, so name them 01, 02, 03 to control the order.
- Set the Frame delay in milliseconds. 100 ms is ten frames a second; 500 ms is a slow slideshow.
- Choose how Different sizes are handled, and whether it should Loop forever, then make the GIF.
Tips
- GIF can only hold 256 colours per frame. Tick Dither for photos to avoid banding; leave it off for flat graphics and text.
- Smaller frames make much smaller GIFs. Resize the images first with the Bulk Image Resizer if the file is too large to post.
- To take a GIF apart instead, use the GIF Frame Extractor.
GIF Maker: what it does and when to use it
The GIF Maker turns a set of images into an animated GIF. Frames play in file-name order, so name them 01, 02, 03 and so on; the frame delay sets the speed, from fast animation at around 100 milliseconds per frame to a slow slideshow at 500 or more. Images of different sizes can be fitted inside the frame, cropped to fill it, or matched to the size of the first image.
GIF is an old format with one big limitation: each frame can use at most 256 colours. The encoder here picks the best 256 colours for your images, which works well for screen recordings, simple animations, diagrams and stickers, but photos can show banding in smooth areas such as skies and skin.
GIF files get large quickly, so keep dimensions modest, 480 to 800 pixels wide, and the number of frames low. Many sites convert uploaded GIFs to video for this reason. To go the other way and take a GIF apart, use the GIF Frame Extractor.
GIF Maker: frequently asked questions
Is the GIF Maker free, and do I need to sign up?
Yes, the GIF Maker is 100% free with no sign-up, no login and no account. The GIF Maker runs in your browser, so it has no daily limit and no upload, and saves at full size with no watermark. See why it is free.
How do I make a GIF from pictures?
Select two or more images at once, set the frame delay and whether it loops, and download the animated GIF. Frames are ordered by file name, so name them 01, 02, 03 to control the sequence. Related tool: Image Resizer.
How do I make a GIF smaller?
Use smaller images and fewer frames: GIF stores every frame in full, so shrinking the pictures first with the Bulk Image Resizer makes the biggest difference. Leave dithering off for flat graphics, which compress better without it.
Can I edit an existing GIF?
Split it into frames with the GIF Frame Extractor, edit the frames you want, then rebuild it here.
