Selection Tools: how to use it
- Drop in an image.
- Choose a selection tool: Rectangle, Ellipse, Lasso (draw around it) or the magic wand (tap a colour).
- Set the Tolerance and Feather, then Crop to selection, Delete selection, or Keep only selection. Download the result.
Tips
- Invert selects everything except what you picked, which is useful for removing a plain background.
- A small feather softens the edge so the cut does not look sharp and artificial.
Selection Tools: what it does and when to use it
Selection Tools gives you the four ways image editors mark part of a picture: rectangle and ellipse marquees for regular shapes, a lasso for drawing freely around an object, and the magic wand, which selects connected pixels similar in colour to the one you tap. Tolerance sets how similar they must be; Feather softens the edge of the selection.
Once an area is selected you can crop to it, delete it to transparency, or keep only it and delete everything else. The magic wand is fastest on flat backgrounds such as a white wall or a studio sweep; the lasso is better for irregular objects on busy backgrounds.
Hand selections are only as precise as your drawing, so zoom in for detailed edges. For people, pets and products on real backgrounds, the Background Remover finds the edge automatically and handles hair better than any manual selection.
Selection Tools: frequently asked questions
Is the Selection Tools free, and do I need to sign up?
Yes, the Selection Tools is 100% free with no sign-up, no login and no account. The Selection Tools runs in your browser, so it has no daily limit and no upload, and saves at full size with no watermark. See why it is free.
How do I select part of an image online?
Use the rectangle for boxes, the lasso for free shapes, and the magic wand to select an area of similar colour with one click. The selection can then be cut, copied, inverted or kept on its own. Related tool: Brush, Eraser & Fill.
Is there a free magic wand tool online?
Yes, here. Click an area and everything connected with a similar colour is selected; raise the tolerance to include more. For cutting a person or product out of a photo, the AI Background Remover is usually faster.
Can I cut out an object and paste it on another photo?
Select it and keep only the selection as a transparent PNG, then place it on a new background with the Background Replacer.
