Red-Eye Remover: how to use it

  1. Drop in the photo.
  2. Click each red pupil once.
  3. Check the result and download. Only the red is removed; skin and clothing keep their colour.

Tips

  • Red eye comes from a flash close to the lens. Turning on more room lights makes the pupils smaller and avoids it.

Red-Eye Remover: what it does and when to use it

Red eye happens when a flash close to the lens lights up the blood-rich back of the eye, and the camera records it through a wide-open pupil. It is most common in dim rooms, with small cameras and phones, and with children and pets, whose pupils open wider in the dark.

Click each red pupil once, with the brush a little larger than the pupil. Inside that circle, only pixels that are strongly red compared with their green and blue are changed, and they are turned to a neutral dark tone. The white catchlight is not red, so it survives and the eye still looks alive. Skin, lips and red clothing elsewhere are not touched, because nothing outside the circle is examined.

Pets often show green, yellow or white eye-shine rather than red, which this tool does not target; for those, the Retouch Tools or Dodge, Burn & Sponge let you darken the pupil by hand. To avoid red eye in the first place, turn on more room light so pupils narrow, or bounce the flash off a ceiling.

How do I remove red eye from a photo?

Click on each red pupil. Only the red reflection is replaced with a natural dark pupil; the iris, skin and lashes are not touched. Related tool: Retouch Tools.

Does it work on pets?

Pets usually reflect green, yellow or white rather than red, so it may not detect them. For those, darken the pupil with the Dodge and Burn burn brush.

Why do photos get red eyes?

The flash reflects off the blood-rich back of the eye when the flash is close to the lens in a dark room. Turning on more lights, or bouncing the flash, prevents it. Related tool: Image Adjustments.
