Transparency & Opacity: how to use it
- Drop in an image.
- Set the Opacity to make the whole image see-through.
- Or tick Flatten onto a solid colour to remove transparency and fill it with a background colour. Then download.
Tips
- Save as PNG or WebP to keep transparency. JPG cannot hold it.
- Flattening is useful before uploading a transparent logo somewhere that shows transparency as black.
- Our transparent images guide explains which formats and apps keep it.
Transparency & Opacity: what it does and when to use it
Transparency & Opacity does two opposite jobs. Lowering Opacity makes the whole image partly see-through, which is useful for logos placed as watermarks, overlays for video, and faint background graphics on slides. Flatten does the reverse: it fills every transparent pixel with a solid colour, so a cut-out PNG becomes an ordinary picture on white, black or a brand colour.
Flattening matters more than people expect. Many upload forms, printers and messaging apps show transparent areas as black or checkerboard, and saving as JPEG turns them white whether you like it or not. Choosing the colour yourself avoids surprises.
Only PNG and WebP keep partial transparency; if you lower the opacity, download as one of those. To create transparency in the first place, remove a background with the Background Remover or knock out a flat colour with the Chroma Key Remover. Our transparent images guide explains which apps keep transparency and which drop it.
Transparency & Opacity: frequently asked questions
Is the Transparency & Opacity free, and do I need to sign up?
Yes, the Transparency & Opacity is 100% free with no sign-up, no login and no account. The Transparency & Opacity runs in your browser, so it has no daily limit and no upload, and saves at full size with no watermark. See why it is free.
How do I make an image semi-transparent?
Lower the opacity and save as PNG or WebP. JPEG cannot store transparency, so it would be flattened onto a colour.
How do I remove a transparent background and make it white?
Flatten the image onto white (or any colour) and save as JPEG or PNG. This fixes logos that show a black box in apps that do not support transparency.
Why does my transparent PNG have a black background?
The app showing it does not support transparency, or the image was saved as JPEG. Our transparent images guide lists which formats and apps keep it.
