Watermark Tool: how to use it

  1. Drop in your photo and type the Watermark text, such as your name or website.
  2. Set the Size, Colour, Opacity and Angle.
  3. Tick Tile across the whole image and set the Tile spacing for a repeated mark, then download.

Tips

  • A tiled mark at 20 to 35% opacity is much harder to crop out than one mark in a corner.
  • Keep the original, un-watermarked file for yourself.

Watermark Tool: what it does and when to use it

The Watermark Tool writes your name, website or copyright notice onto a photo, either once or tiled across the whole picture at an angle. Size, colour, opacity and angle are all adjustable, and the preview updates as you change them.

A single small mark in a corner looks professional but is easy to crop off. A faint tiled mark across the whole image is much harder to remove and still lets people see the photo, which is why stock photo previews use it. Opacity between about 20 and 40 percent is usually visible without spoiling the picture; white text with a little transparency works on most photos.

No watermark is impossible to remove, and a watermark does not replace copyright, which you hold automatically when you take a photo. It does make casual reuse harder and tells people who to credit. Keep your unmarked originals, and share smaller copies online: a 1600 pixel photo is far less useful to someone who wants to print it. To add a single caption instead, use Add Text to Image.

Watermark Tool: frequently asked questions

Is the Watermark Tool free, and do I need to sign up?

Yes, the Watermark Tool is 100% free with no sign-up, no login and no account. The Watermark Tool runs in your browser, so it has no daily limit and no upload, and saves at full size with no watermark. See why it is free.

How do I add a watermark to my photos for free?

Type your name or website, set the size, opacity and angle, and choose one mark or a pattern tiled across the whole photo. A tiled watermark at low opacity is the hardest to crop out.

Where should I put a watermark?

A single mark in a corner is easy to crop away. To protect a photo properly, tile it across the image or place it over an important part at low opacity. Add your name to the file itself as well with the Metadata Editor.
