Colour Palette Extractor: what it does and when to use it
The Colour Palette Extractor finds the main colours in an image and lists them as HEX, RGB and HSL. It groups similar pixels together and reports the colour at the centre of each group, so a photo of a beach might come back as sand, sea, sky and a shadow tone, from three up to twelve colours.
Designers use it to build a colour scheme from a photo, a mood board or a competitor's artwork; it is also a quick way to find the colours of a logo when you only have an image of it. Fewer colours give broad, representative tones; more colours pick up accents.
The colours are averages, so they will not always match a single exact pixel; for that, use the Colour Picker. Large areas dominate the palette, so a small but important accent can be missed at low colour counts. Check the contrast of text and background colours before using them together.
