Canvas & Border: how to use it

  1. Drop in an image.
  2. Choose the Mode: add a border, expand the canvas to an exact size, or pad to a square.
  3. Set the width or canvas size and the background colour (or tick Transparent background), then download.

Tips

  • Nothing is stretched or cropped: space is added around the image.
  • Pad to a square is the quickest way to fit a whole product photo into a square listing slot.
  • To fill the extra space with more of the scene instead of a colour, try Image Uncrop.

Canvas & Border: what it does and when to use it

Canvas & Border adds space around a picture without stretching or cropping it. It works in three ways: a border of even width around every side, an expanded canvas of an exact size with the photo placed at one of nine anchor points, or padding to a square so a landscape or portrait photo fits a square post whole.

The added area can be any colour or transparent. A white border makes a photo look printed and gives it room on a busy feed; a transparent canvas is useful for icons and app store images that must be an exact size with the artwork centred inside.

The photo itself keeps its pixels; only the canvas around it changes. If you would rather fill the extra space with a blurred copy of the photo, Instagram No Crop does that, and to fill it with more of the scene, Uncrop / Expand uses AI to continue the picture.

Canvas & Border: frequently asked questions

Is the Canvas & Border free, and do I need to sign up?

Yes, the Canvas & Border is 100% free with no sign-up, no login and no account. The Canvas & Border runs in your browser, so it has no daily limit and no upload, and saves at full size with no watermark. See why it is free.

How do I add a white border to a photo?

Add the same amount on every side and choose white. The photo keeps its full size and nothing is cropped. For Polaroid, film strip and wood frames, see Photo Frames.

How do I make a rectangular photo square without cropping?

Grow the shorter side until the canvas is square and fill the new space with a colour. For a blurred background instead of a flat colour, use No Crop.

What is the difference between canvas size and image size?

Image size scales the whole picture up or down. Canvas size adds or removes space around the picture without scaling it. To scale, use the Image Resizer.
