PDF to Image: how to use it
- Choose a PDF.
- Set the Resolution. 2 renders at about 144 DPI, 4 at about 288 DPI; higher is sharper but slower.
- Choose PNG or JPG and whether you want every page or only the first, then download.
Tips
- PNG keeps text crisp; JPG gives smaller files for pages that are mostly photos.
- Password-protected PDFs have to be unlocked in a PDF reader first.
- To go the other way, from images to one PDF, use Image to PDF.
PDF to Image: what it does and when to use it
This tool renders each page of a PDF with pdf.js, the same open-source PDF engine Firefox uses, and saves the pages as PNG or JPG images. It is handy for putting a page of a document into a presentation, posting a flyer on social media, or sending one page of a form to someone who cannot open PDFs.
The Resolution setting controls how many pixels each page gets. At 2 a letter or A4 page comes out at roughly 144 DPI, which is fine for viewing on a screen; at 4 it is roughly 288 DPI, sharp enough for printing or zooming into small text, but slower to make and heavier to download. PNG keeps text and line art crisp; JPG is smaller for pages that are mostly photos.
Rendering turns text into pixels, so the resulting images are no longer searchable or selectable. To get the words back out of an image, use Image to Text (OCR). Password-protected PDFs need to be unlocked in a PDF reader first, and the whole file is processed in your browser, so a very long document can take a while on a phone.
