AI Background Remover: Clean Cut-Outs of Hair, Fur and Glass
To remove the background from an image, open the Background Remover, add the photo and download a transparent PNG. The free version runs on your own device and handles most people, pets and products. When the edge is hard (flyaway hair, fur, a glass bottle, a bike wheel) the Pro AI version sends the photo to Google’s segmentation model on Vertex AI for a cleaner cut-out.
Background Remover: the short answer
- Clear subject, plain background: the free version is enough.
- Fine hair, fur, glass, lace or spokes: use Pro AI (10 credits).
- For a white background for Amazon or eBay, cut out first, then use the Product Photo Studio.
- Keep the result as PNG or WebP; JPEG cannot hold transparency.

How do I remove the background from a picture for free?
Open the Background Remover, choose the photo and press Remove background. The model runs in your browser, so there is no upload, no app and no watermark; you need a free account. You get a transparent PNG, or pick White, a colour or a blurred background instead.
What is the best AI background remover for hair?
Hair is where background removers differ most, because each strand is thinner than a pixel at the edge. Small on-device models tend to clip flyaways or leave a halo. Large cloud segmentation models, like the Google model behind Pro AI, keep far more of the fine outline. Try the free version, and if the hair looks cut with scissors, run Pro AI on the same photo.
How do I make the background of a photo transparent?
Remove the background and save as PNG or WebP. Transparency is stored in an alpha channel, which JPEG does not have, so a JPEG cut-out always ends up on a solid colour. Our guide on making a background transparent covers logos and signatures too.
How do I remove the background from a product photo for Amazon?
Amazon’s main image needs a pure white background (RGB 255, 255, 255) with the product filling most of the frame. Cut the product out with the Background Remover, then use the Product Photo Studio to place it on white at marketplace size. The marketplace photo requirements guide lists every platform’s rules.
Is there a free alternative to remove.bg?
Yes. The free Background Remover here does the same job in your browser with no per-image price and no watermark, at standard size free and full resolution for one credit. For the hard edges where a large cloud model helps, Pro AI uses Google’s segmentation model for 10 credits.
Why use ImgVX Pro AI for it
- A large Google model for the hard edges. Pro AI uses Google’s segmentation model on Vertex AI, built for subjects such as hair, fur and transparent objects that small models struggle with.
- You only pay when you need it. The free on-device version is on the same page, so easy photos cost nothing and Pro AI is there for the ones that fail.
- The cut-out comes back as a mask and is applied to your original photo in the browser, so the subject keeps its full resolution and colour.
- Failed runs cost nothing. If Google returns an error or a safety filter stops the image, the credits go straight back to your account.
- No app, no watermark. It runs from the page in any modern browser on a phone or computer, and the download carries no ImgVX watermark. Google adds its invisible SynthID mark to AI images, which is how AI content should be labelled.
Free version or Pro AI?
The Background Remover page has two versions of the tool. Try the free one first: if it is good enough, you have spent nothing.
| Free (on your device) | Pro AI (Google Vertex AI) | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it runs | In your browser; the photo never leaves your device | Google Vertex AI; the photo is sent to Google for that run only |
| Model | A compact open-source model | Google’s image segmentation model on Vertex AI |
| Cost | Free with a free account | 10 paid credits a run |
| Best for | People, pets and products with clear edges against a plain background | Flyaway hair, fur, glass, lace, plants and busy backgrounds |
How to use the Background Remover, step by step
- Open the Background Remover and choose your photo.
- Press Remove background to try the free on-device version.
- If the edge is not clean enough, scroll to “Pro AI” under the tool and press Run Pro AI (10 credits).
- Pick Transparent, White or a colour, then download as PNG.
Tips for better results
- A sharp photo with the subject in focus gives a cleaner edge than any model can recover from blur.
- Contrast helps: a dark subject on a light wall cuts out better than grey on grey.
- Check the edge on both a white and a black background before you publish; halos hide on one and show on the other. The clean edges guide explains how to fix them.
What it will not do
- It separates the subject from the background; it does not change the subject itself.
- Semi-transparent things (smoke, veils, a glass of water) are approximated: the result is better than a hard edge but not a physically exact transparency.
- Every typed description is checked by our payment provider’s moderation service before Google sees it, and Google’s own safety filters run on every image. Anything in our Acceptable Use Policy (sexual content, anything involving minors, deepfakes, fake documents, removing watermarks) is refused before any credits are used.
What it costs
Pro AI runs on paid credits only, because every run costs us money on Google Cloud: the Background Remover uses 10 credits a run. Pro Monthly is $5.90 a month with 300 credits (your first month is $1), enough for about 30 runs. Pro Yearly is $39.99 a year with 4,000 credits. With no subscription, a credit pack of 50 is $4.99 and 200 is $12.99. The free trial credits do not cover Pro AI, and an account’s Pro AI use is capped by what it has paid, so the $1 first month covers only a few runs. See pricing.
Your photo is sent to Google Vertex AI for that run and is not stored by us; we keep a log of the run (tool, time, credits and any text you typed). The privacy policy has the details.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Pro AI background remover free?
No. The free on-device Background Remover is free; the Pro AI version runs on Google Vertex AI and uses 10 paid credits a run. Failed runs give the credits back.
Does it keep the full resolution of my photo?
Yes. Pro AI returns a cut-out mask that is applied to your original photo in the browser, so the subject keeps its size and colour.
Can I remove the background from many photos at once?
The free tool works one photo at a time here, and the Bulk Image Resizer and the ImgVX AI Studio help with batches of other edits. Pro AI runs one photo per run.
Is my photo stored?
No. With Pro AI the photo is sent to Google Vertex AI for that run and is not stored by us. The free version never uploads it at all. Browse: all free image tools.
Can I use the cut-out commercially?
Yes, if you own the photo or have permission to use it. Do not use it to mislead people about a product or a person. More help: ImgVX AI help docs.
