Tilt-Shift Miniature: how to use it

  1. Drop in a photo taken from above, such as a street from a balcony.
  2. Set the focus height to where the main action is, and choose the blur strength.
  3. Press Make it miniature and download.

Tips

  • High viewpoints with small people and cars sell the illusion; eye-level photos do not.
  • Toy colours brightens and saturates the result, which is half of the miniature look.

Tilt-Shift Miniature: what it does and when to use it

Tilt-Shift Miniature makes a real scene look like a tiny model: a city street, a harbour, a stadium or a train yard turns into something that seems to sit on a table. The effect copies what a real tilt-shift lens or a macro shot of a model does: a thin band in focus, everything nearer and farther softly blurred, and bright, toy-like colours.

Most tilt-shift tools blur in straight bands, which smears a building standing in the focus band. This one first measures depth with Depth Anything V2, an AI model that runs on your device, so the blur grows with real distance from the focus as well as with height in the frame. Choose where the focus sits, how strong the blur is, and whether to brighten the colours.

The illusion works best on photos taken from above, looking down at a scene with people, cars or buildings in it, such as a view from a balcony, a bridge or a drone. A photo at eye level rarely convinces. For a shallow-focus portrait look instead, use Portrait Blur; for a depth map or a 3D motion GIF, the 3D Photo & Depth Map tool.

Tilt-Shift Miniature: frequently asked questions

How do I make a photo look like a miniature?

Use a photo taken from above, set the focus height where the main subject is and press Make it miniature. The tool blurs everything nearer and farther than the focus and brightens the colours, which is what makes a real scene look like a model.

Why does my photo not look miniature?

The effect depends on the viewpoint. A miniature is something you look down on, so photos from a balcony, a hill, a bridge or a drone work and eye-level photos rarely do. Small people and cars in the frame help a lot. Related tool: 3D Photo & Depth Map.

What does the AI do here?

It measures depth. Ordinary tilt-shift filters blur in horizontal bands, which blurs a tall building in the focus. Here the blur follows the measured distance as well, so things at the focus distance stay sharp from top to bottom. Related tool: Portrait Blur.

Is this the same as a real tilt-shift lens?

It imitates the look. A real tilt-shift lens tilts the plane of focus optically; this tool blurs by measured depth and height, which gives the same miniature impression on a photo you already have. Related tool: 3D Photo & Depth Map.
