Background Remover: what it does and when to use it
Background removal is a job for a segmentation model: a neural network that looks at every pixel and estimates how much of it belongs to the subject. The result is a matte, a soft mask that is fully opaque on the subject, transparent on the background, and partly transparent along hair and fuzzy edges, which is what makes a cut-out look natural rather than scissored.
There are two models to choose from. Fast is MODNet, about 25 MB, trained on portraits, and quick on any laptop. Best edges is BiRefNet lite, about 110 MB, which handles any kind of subject, from products and pets to furniture, and keeps finer detail along the outline at the cost of a longer first download and more processing. Both run inside your browser, so the photo is never uploaded.
Results are best with a clear subject that stands apart from the background. Glass, smoke, very fine hair against a busy scene and subjects the same colour as the background are hard for any model; check the edges at full size before using the result. Fine strands against a busy background are the hardest case, so expect to touch up the edges for a product shot that needs to be flawless.
