Change a Photo Background with AI: Describe the New Scene
To change a photo’s background, open the Background Replacer, describe the new scene and let AI put your subject into it. The free version cuts the subject out on your device and places it on a colour, a blur or a photo you choose. Pro AI uses Google’s background-swap model on Vertex AI: you write “a sunny beach at golden hour” and it builds that scene behind the subject, with light that matches.
Background Replacer: the short answer
- Plain colour, blur or your own photo behind the subject: the free version.
- A new scene from a description, with matching light: Pro AI (10 credits).
- White background for marketplaces: the Product Photo Studio.
- The subject itself is kept as it is.
What people search for, answered
How do I change the background of a photo?
Open the Background Replacer, choose the photo and either pick a background (colour, blur or another photo) for free, or type a new scene in the Pro AI panel. Pro AI generates the scene behind your subject and matches the lighting.
What is an AI background generator?
A model that draws a new background from a description, instead of pasting the subject on a stock photo. Because the scene is generated around the subject, shadows and light can be made to match, which is what usually gives a pasted background away.
How do I change a product photo background for social media?
Describe a setting that suits the product, such as “on a marble counter next to a lemon” or “on a wooden table by a window”. For product-first shots, the Product Photo Studio has ready-made scenes.
Can I change the background of a picture on my phone?
Yes, in the phone’s browser: open the Background Replacer, choose the photo and type the scene. Pro AI runs on Google’s servers, so it works the same on any phone.
How do I make a photo background white?
Remove the background with the Background Remover and choose White. That is free and exact (pure white), which marketplaces require; a generated scene is not needed.
Why use ImgVX Pro AI for it
- Google’s dedicated background-swap model on Vertex AI, which keeps the subject and generates only what is behind it.
- Light that matches. The scene is built around the subject, so it does not look cut and pasted.
- Plain words. Describe the scene; no masks, layers or stock-photo search.
- Failed runs cost nothing. If Google returns an error or a safety filter stops the image, the credits go straight back to your account.
- No app, no watermark. It runs from the page in any modern browser on a phone or computer, and the download carries no ImgVX watermark. Google adds its invisible SynthID mark to AI images, which is how AI content should be labelled.
Free version or Pro AI?
The Background Replacer page has two versions of the tool. Try the free one first: if it is good enough, you have spent nothing.
| Free (on your device) | Pro AI (Google Vertex AI) | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it runs | In your browser; the photo never leaves your device | Google Vertex AI; the photo is sent to Google for that run only |
| Model | A compact open-source model | Google Imagen background swap on Vertex AI |
| Cost | Free with a free account | 10 paid credits a run |
| Best for | Solid colours, blur and your own background photo | A new scene from a description, with matching light and shadows |
How to use the Background Replacer, step by step
- Open the Background Replacer and choose the photo.
- In “Pro AI”, describe the new background, for example “a quiet café with warm lights”.
- Press Run Pro AI (10 credits).
- Compare and download. Try a second description if the first is not right.
Tips for better results
- Describe light and time of day (“soft morning light”, “golden hour”) so the model can match it.
- Keep the scene plausible for the subject: a product on a kitchen counter, a bicycle on a street.
- For listings and ads, check the platform’s rules: some do not allow altered backgrounds on main images.
What it will not do
- It changes the background only. Requests to change a person (face, body, hair, clothes) are refused before any credits are used.
- Do not use it to place someone somewhere they were not in a way that misleads people.
- Every typed description is checked by our payment provider’s moderation service before Google sees it, and Google’s own safety filters run on every image. Anything in our Acceptable Use Policy (sexual content, anything involving minors, deepfakes, fake documents, removing watermarks) is refused before any credits are used.
What it costs
Pro AI runs on paid credits only, because every run costs us money on Google Cloud: the Background Replacer uses 10 credits a run. Pro Monthly is $5.90 a month with 300 credits (your first month is $1), enough for about 30 runs. Pro Yearly is $39.99 a year with 4,000 credits. With no subscription, a credit pack of 50 is $4.99 and 200 is $12.99. The free trial credits do not cover Pro AI, and an account’s Pro AI use is capped by what it has paid, so the $1 first month covers only a few runs. See pricing.
Your photo is sent to Google Vertex AI for that run and is not stored by us; we keep a log of the run (tool, time, credits and any text you typed). The privacy policy has the details.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Background Replacer free?
The on-device version is free. The Pro AI scene generator uses 10 paid credits a run, refunded if the run fails.
Does it change the person in the photo?
No. Only the background is replaced, and requests to change a person are refused.
Can I use my own background photo?
Yes, with the free version on the same page; no credits needed.
What size is the result?
About 2K on the long side. Use the Image Upscaler if you need it larger.
Try it on your own photo
