Image Upscaler: how to use it
- Drop in a small or low-resolution image.
- Choose the Scale: 2×, 4×, or 8× (4× with AI, then doubled).
- Upscale, compare with the original, and download.
Tips
- The AI adds sharp edges and texture that look right, but it cannot recover detail that was never captured. Small text and faces may come out different from the real thing.
- Very large results are refused rather than crashing the tab. If that happens, choose a smaller scale.
- For old, grainy or faded photos, the Photo Restorer also fixes tone and can add colour.
Image Upscaler: what it does and when to use it
A normal resize makes a picture bigger by spreading its pixels out and blending between them, which always looks soft. This upscaler uses Real-ESRGAN, a small neural network trained on pairs of low- and high-resolution photos, to predict what the sharper version should look like: crisp edges, cleaner texture, and less of the blockiness and noise that small, compressed images carry.
The model works at 4×. For 2× the 4× result is scaled down, which also cleans the image, and for 8× the 4× result is doubled again by ordinary resampling. The model file is about 5 MB, so the first run starts quickly. Transparent PNGs keep their transparency, and there is a ceiling of about 36 megapixels on the output, because beyond that a browser tab runs out of memory.
Upscaling makes an image look better at a larger size; it cannot recover detail that was never photographed. Tiny faces and text can come out smooth or slightly invented, so check them before printing. For prints, work out the pixels the print needs first: our DPI and print size guide explains how.
Image Upscaler: frequently asked questions
Is the Image Upscaler free, and do I need to sign up?
Yes, the Image Upscaler is 100% free with no sign-up, no login and no account. The Image Upscaler runs its AI model on your own device, so it has no credits, no daily limit and no upload, and saves at full resolution with no watermark. See why it is free.
Can it recover detail that is not there?
No, and anything that claims otherwise is guessing. An upscaler predicts what a plausible higher-resolution version would look like based on what it has seen before. That works well on faces, text and clean edges, and poorly on fine texture. It is not a way to read a blurry number plate. Related tool: Image Resizer.
How do I increase the resolution of an image without losing quality?
Use an AI upscaler rather than a plain resize. Ordinary enlarging stretches the existing pixels and looks soft; the Real-ESRGAN model here predicts sharp edges and clean texture at 2x or 4x. It cannot invent true detail, but it looks far better than stretching. Read how to resize without losing quality for the limits.
Is this AI image upscaler really free with no watermark?
Yes. It runs on your own graphics card, so enlarging a photo costs us nothing and there is no credit system, daily limit or watermark. The model is about 5 MB and downloads once.
How do I upscale an image for printing?
Work out the pixels the print needs first: at 300 DPI an 8 by 10 inch print needs 2400 by 3000 pixels. Upscale until you reach it, then set the DPI with the DPI Converter. Our DPI and print size guide has a table of common sizes.
