Photos That Sell on Vinted, eBay and Facebook Marketplace
Second-hand items sell faster with bright daylight photos on a plain background, the whole item shown first, and honest close-ups of the label and any flaws. You can take all of them with a phone, and fix the light and the background for free in your browser with ImgVX AI, with no sign-up and no upload.
The short answer
- Light: next to a window in daylight, out of direct sun, with the flash off.
- First photo: the whole item, straight on, on a plain background. On Vinted, no collages.
- Then: the label and size, the fabric or material close up, the back, and every flaw.
- Before you upload: brighten dull photos, clean up the background if you want, and remove the location stored in the photo.
The rules that get listings removed
Each site has its own picture rules, and breaking them can hide or remove a listing. These are from the sites' own help pages, checked in October 2026:
| Site | Photos | Not allowed |
|---|---|---|
| Vinted | Up to 20. The first one should show the entire item. | Collages, stock photos, watermarks, pictures found online. Defects you do not show can lead to a return. |
| eBay | At least one, at least 500 px on the longest side. More than one sells better. | Added borders, added text or artwork, watermarks of any kind, stock photos of used, damaged or defective items. |
| Etsy (vintage) | At least 2000 px is recommended; the first photo at least 635 px. | Important detail near the edges, because thumbnails are cropped square, portrait and landscape. |
| Facebook Marketplace | No pixel rule given. Photos must show the actual item. | Misleading photos and items that break the Commerce Policies. |
The common thread is simple: show the real item, and do not draw on the photo. Writing "£10" or "SOLD" on the picture, adding your username, or framing the photo with a border all break at least one of these rules. Put that information in the listing text instead.
Take the photos
- Find the light. Stand side-on to a big window during the day. Cloudy days are best, because the light is soft. Turn off the overhead light; mixing it with daylight turns whites yellow.
- Clear a plain background. A white wall, a door, a bed sheet or a sheet of card. For clothes, hang them on a plain hanger against a door, or lay them flat on a clean floor or bed and shoot from straight above.
- Prepare the item. Lint-roll it, steam or iron creases, close zips and buttons. Creases and fluff look twice as bad in a photo.
- Use the main lens, not the ultra-wide, and step back a little. Tap the item to focus, then slide the exposure down a touch if white fabric loses its detail.
- Leave space around the item. Many resale apps show a square or near-square thumbnail in the feed. Keep the item in the middle with a margin, and the site can crop it any way it likes.
The photo order that answers buyers' questions
Buyers on resale sites ask the same questions every time. Answer them in the photos, in this order, and you get fewer messages and fewer returns:
- The whole item from the front. This is the thumbnail, so it does most of the work.
- The back.
- The label: brand, size and fabric content. A size label in the photo settles most "what size is it really?" questions.
- A close-up of the material, so buyers can see the knit, the leather grain or the print.
- Every flaw: pilling, a mark, a loose thread, a scuff on a sole. Show it close up and mention it in the description.
- For clothes, the item worn or on a hanger, so buyers see the fit. If you do not want your face in it, crop above the shoulders or cover it with a sticker.
- For electronics: the item switched on, the screen, ports, the serial number area and the accessories included.
Fix the photos for free, in the browser
Every tool below runs on your phone or computer inside the browser tab, so the photos are not uploaded anywhere until you post them yourself.
| Problem | Tool | What to set |
|---|---|---|
| Too dark, or yellow from a room light | Image Adjustments | Raise brightness a little; move white balance towards blue to take out the yellow |
| Taken in the evening, dark and grainy | Low Light & Dehaze | Then a light pass of the Noise Reducer if needed |
| Messy room behind the item | Background Remover | Background: White |
| Want a square, shop-style photo | Product Photo Studio | White backdrop, soft shadow, 1600 × 1600 for eBay or 2000 × 2000 |
| A box or a book photographed at an angle | Perspective Corrector | Drag the corners to the item's corners |
| Slightly soft or blurry | AI Photo Enhancer | Helps a little blur; retake a badly shaken photo |
| A lot of photos to shrink for a slow upload | Bulk Image Resizer | 1600 px longest side keeps plenty of detail |
Background removal works best on items with a clear outline, such as shoes, bags, toys, gadgets and folded clothes. Fluffy knits and sheer fabric can lose a little of their edge, so check the result at full size. Our guide to clean cut-out edges covers the fixes.
On Vinted, a white cut-out photo is allowed, but many buyers like to see the item in a real room or worn. Use a clean cut-out for the first photo if you like, and keep the others natural.
What you should not edit
The Object Eraser is handy for removing a stray sock or a cable from the background. Do not use it, or any tool, on the item itself: hiding a stain, a crack or a missing button turns the listing into "item not as described", and that is a return or a refund on every major site. Be careful with colour too. Correct a yellow cast so the colour is true, but do not make a faded jumper look bright. Buyers compare the parcel with the photos.
Keep your home and your location private
- Remove the GPS location. Phone photos can store exactly where they were taken, which for a resale listing is usually your home. The Metadata Remover strips it, along with the rest of the EXIF data such as the phone model. Read more in the EXIF and privacy guide.
- Check the background for letters, parcels with your address, house numbers through a window, family photos and children.
- Mirror selfies show you and your room. Crop them, or blur the parts you want to hide with the Blur Tool.
- Serial numbers: show that a phone or laptop has one, but blur part of the number if you do not want it copied before the sale.
Is any equipment worth buying?
Most people need none. If you sell a lot, three cheap things make the biggest difference: a small phone tripod for steady, identical shots; a roll of white or light-grey backdrop paper or a foam board; and a clothes steamer. A small light box is worth it for jewellery, watches and other small shiny items, which reflect everything in a room. A ring light is less useful than it looks for products, because it puts a bright circle in anything shiny.

Frequently asked questions
What makes photos sell on Vinted?
Daylight, a plain background, the whole item in the first photo, then close-ups of the label, the fabric and any flaws. Vinted allows up to 20 photos and does not allow collages, stock photos or watermarks. Clear photos of the real item get more favourites and fewer returns.
Can I remove the background from my eBay photos?
Yes. eBay does not ban a plain or white background; it bans added borders, added text and watermarks. The Background Remover with a white background, or the Product Photo Studio for a square photo with a soft shadow, does it for free in your browser.
What size should eBay photos be?
eBay asks for at least 500 pixels on the longest side. Any recent phone photo is far bigger than that, so you do not need to resize it. For a square photo that fills the listing, the Product Photo Studio has a 1600 × 1600 px eBay size.
Is it okay to edit second-hand item photos?
Editing the light, the background and the crop is fine. Hiding a stain, a scratch or a hole is not: buyers can return an item that is not as shown, on eBay, Vinted and most other sites. Use the edits to make the item easy to see, not to make it look better than it is.
Can buyers see where I live from my photos?
Phone photos can carry the GPS location where they were taken, and some sites do not remove it. Strip it with the Metadata Remover before uploading. Also check the background for house numbers, letters with your address, and faces in mirrors.
Do I need a light box?
No. A big window with daylight that is not direct sun does the same job for most items. A light box helps with small, shiny things such as jewellery, and with photographing a lot of items in the evening. More help: ImgVX AI help docs.
