Object Eraser: how to use it

  1. Drop in your photo.
  2. Set the brush size and paint over what should go: a person in the background, a sign, a stain or a cable.
  3. Press Erase painted area. Only the painted part changes; download when it looks right.

Tips

  • Paint a little beyond the edges of the object, including its shadow.
  • Big objects are easier to remove in two or three smaller passes.
  • The fill works best on grass, sky, walls and other simple backgrounds. On a detailed pattern, the Retouch Tools clone stamp gives more control.

Object Eraser: what it does and when to use it

The Object Eraser uses MI-GAN, an inpainting model that fills a masked area with plausible picture based on everything around it. You paint over what should go, and only that painted area is replaced: the rest of the photo is left pixel for pixel as it was, which is not true of every AI editor.

It is at its best on backgrounds with texture but no strict structure: grass, sand, sky, water, foliage, plaster walls, a tabletop. Tourists in the distance, a bin at the side of a street, a power line against the sky, a stain on a shirt or a date stamp in a corner are all good candidates. Paint a little wider than the object, and include its shadow, or the outline stays visible.

Large objects in front of detailed structure, such as a person standing in front of a brick wall with windows, ask the model to invent a lot, and the fill can look smudged. Work in smaller pieces and repeat on any part that looks wrong. For single spots and dust, the Retouch Tools spot healer changes even less. Only edit photos you have the right to edit; our terms forbid removing other people's watermarks.

Object Eraser: frequently asked questions

Is the Object Eraser free, and do I need to sign up?

Yes, the Object Eraser is 100% free with no sign-up, no login and no account. The Object Eraser runs its AI model on your own device, so it has no credits, no daily limit and no upload, and saves at full resolution with no watermark. See why it is free.

How do I remove an object from a photo?

Paint over it with the brush, a little wider than the object, and press Erase painted area. The MI-GAN model fills the painted area from its surroundings, and only the painted pixels change; the rest of the photo stays exactly as it was.

What does it do badly?

Large areas with a lot of structure, such as half a face or a busy pattern behind the object. It is at its best on people or litter in a landscape, wires against the sky and spots on a wall. For big jobs, erase in two or three smaller passes. Related tool: Text Remover.

How do I remove a person from a photo for free?

Brush over the person, including their shadow, and press Erase painted area. The AI fills the area from the surroundings on your device, with no upload and no watermark. It works best when the person stands against grass, sand, sky, water or a plain wall.

Can it remove power lines, wires or blemishes?

Yes. Thin wires against the sky are one of the easiest cases: paint along them with a small brush. For small spots and dust on a portrait, the Retouch Tools spot healer is quicker and changes even less of the photo.

Why does the erased area look smudged?

Because the model has to guess what was behind the object. The more varied and structured that background is, the harder the guess. Erase in smaller pieces, paint a little wider than the object so no outline is left, and try again on any area that looks wrong: each pass only changes what you painted.
