Post a Full Picture on Instagram Without Cropping

To post a full picture on Instagram without cropping, put the whole photo inside a 4:5 or 1:1 frame before you upload it, and fill the space around it with a blurred copy of the photo or a colour. The free No Crop tool does this in your browser at the 1080-pixel width Instagram uses, with no sign-up and no watermark.

The short answer

  • Feed post: fit the photo into 4:5 (1080 × 1350 px). It takes up the most room in the feed.
  • Square look: fit it into 1:1 (1080 × 1080 px).
  • Story or Reel: fit it into 9:16 (1080 × 1920 px).
  • Background: a blurred copy of the photo looks the most natural; white suits product shots.

Why Instagram crops your photos

Instagram's Help Center says feed photos keep their resolution when they are between 320 and 1080 pixels wide and between 1.91:1 (landscape) and 4:5 (portrait). A photo outside that range is cropped to fit it. Wider photos are scaled down to 1080 pixels wide.

The problem is that most phone cameras shoot 3:4 in portrait, which is taller than 4:5. So a normal photo of a person standing loses a strip at the top and bottom, often the top of a head or a pair of feet. Screenshots (around 9:19.5) and panoramas lose far more.

Your photoShapeWhat Instagram does in the feed
Phone photo, portrait3:4Trims the top and bottom to 4:5
Phone photo, landscape4:3Shows it in full
Screenshot or 9:16 video frame9:16 or tallerTrims a lot of the top and bottom
Panoramawider than 1.91:1Trims the sides
Square1:1Shows it in full

Instagram's post screen has an expand button in the corner of the preview, which switches from a square crop to the photo's own shape. It still stops at the 4:5 and 1.91:1 limits, so it does not help with a tall phone photo or a panorama.

How to post a full picture, step by step

  1. Open No Crop and drop in the photo. It works on a phone or a computer, and nothing is uploaded.
  2. Choose the Shape. Portrait 4:5 for a feed post, Square 1:1 for a square grid look, or Story, Reel, TikTok 9:16 for a story.
  3. Choose the Background. Blurred photo is the default. You can also pick a solid colour, white, black, or a gradient made from the colours at the top and bottom of your photo.
  4. Set the Border. This is the margin around the photo, from 0 to 30, and it starts at 4. Set it to 0 if you want the photo to touch two edges.
  5. Adjust the Background blur (4 to 80, starting at 30) if you chose the blurred background. Higher is softer.
  6. Leave Size on Standard for the platform and download. The result is exactly 1080 pixels wide, so Instagram has nothing to resize or cut.
  7. Upload it to Instagram. If the preview shows a square crop, tap the expand button so the post keeps the 4:5 shape.

Which shape to choose

The tool also offers Portrait 3:4 (1080 × 1440 px). Since early 2025 Instagram's profile grid shows thumbnails in a 3:4 shape, but its documented limit for feed posts is still 4:5, so 4:5 is the safe choice for the post itself. Keep the subject near the middle, and the grid thumbnail and the feed post will both show it. The social media image sizes guide has the sizes for other platforms.

Blurred background, white or colour?

The soft shadow under the photo is on by default and only shows when the Border is above 0. It lifts the photo off the background, which looks good on white and colour backgrounds.

Carousels. Instagram gives every slide the shape of the first one. If the first slide is square and the second is a tall portrait, the portrait gets cropped. Fit every photo into the same frame, such as 4:5, before you upload the set.

Stories. A story is 9:16. A normal portrait photo is wider than that, so Instagram zooms in and cuts the sides, or adds its own colour bars. Fitting the photo into 9:16 first lets you choose the background yourself. Leave room at the top and bottom for the profile name and the reply bar.

Panoramas. A very wide photo fitted into 4:5 becomes a thin strip in the middle. It is usually better to split it into several square slides with the Image Splitter and post them as one swipeable carousel.

When this is not the right fix

Fitting a photo shrinks it. On a 9:16 photo placed in a 4:5 frame, the photo fills only part of the frame's width, so small details become harder to see on a phone. If the detail matters more than the full frame, a careful crop with the subject in the centre may look better. For a group photo where nobody can be cut, fitting is the right choice.

Frequently asked questions

How do I post a full picture on Instagram without cropping?

Place the photo inside a frame of a shape Instagram accepts, then post the framed image. The free No Crop tool fits the whole photo into a 4:5, 1:1 or 9:16 frame at 1080 pixels wide and fills the leftover space with a blurred copy of the photo or a colour. Instagram then has nothing to cut off.

Why does Instagram crop my photos?

Feed posts must be between 1.91:1 landscape and 4:5 portrait. A normal phone photo is 3:4, which is taller than 4:5, so Instagram trims the top and bottom. A panorama is wider than 1.91:1, so it loses its sides.

What size should a full photo be for an Instagram post?

For the feed, 1080 by 1350 pixels (4:5) uses the most screen space and keeps the whole photo when it is framed. 1080 by 1080 (1:1) suits square layouts. For Stories and Reels, use 1080 by 1920 (9:16). More help: ImgVX AI help docs.

Does the No Crop tool add a watermark or need an account?

No. It is free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many photos you fit. The photo is processed in your browser and is not uploaded.

How do I post several photos of different shapes in one carousel?

Instagram gives every slide in a carousel the shape of the first one. Fit each photo into the same frame, for example 4:5, before you upload them, and every slide shows in full.

Will a framed photo look blurry on Instagram?

Not if it is exactly 1080 pixels wide, because Instagram then keeps it at that size. Choose Standard for the platform in the Size setting. Keep full resolution is for printing or other sites.
