Uncrop / Expand: how to use it

  1. Drop in a photo that is cropped too tight.
  2. Choose the Target shape: 16:9, 1:1, 9:16, 4:5 or 3:2.
  3. Expand. The new areas at the sides or top and bottom are filled in to match.

Tips

  • Results are best when the edges are sky, water, grass, sand, walls or other simple surfaces.
  • Faces, text and detailed objects at the edge will not be continued convincingly.
  • For an exact banner or cover size, use the Banner Extender.
  • The sizes each shape produces, and the photos uncrop cannot fix, are in How to uncrop a photo.

Uncrop / Expand: what it does and when to use it

Uncrop, sometimes called outpainting, makes a photo larger by painting new picture beyond its edges. The photo is placed on a bigger canvas in the shape you choose, and the MI-GAN inpainting model fills the empty strips so they continue the scene: more sky above a landscape, more wall beside a portrait, more floor under a product.

It is useful when a photo was framed too tightly for where it has to go: a portrait shot that needs to become a 16:9 thumbnail, a landscape that needs to fill a 9:16 story, or a square that needs room for text. The original pixels are kept as they were; only the new areas are generated.

It works best when the edges of the photo are simple, such as sky, water, grass, sand or a plain wall, and struggles when the edge cuts through something with structure, such as a face, a car or text. The added strips are invented, so do not use this to make a photo look like it shows more than it did. For exact banner and cover sizes, the Banner Extender delivers the precise pixel dimensions.

Uncrop / Expand: frequently asked questions

Is the Uncrop / Expand free, and do I need to sign up?

Yes, the Uncrop / Expand is 100% free with no sign-up, no login and no account. The Uncrop / Expand runs its AI model on your own device, so it has no credits, no daily limit and no upload, and saves at full resolution with no watermark. See why it is free.

What kind of photos can it expand?

Photos whose edges are simple: sky, sea, grass, sand, walls or a blurred background. The MI-GAN model continues textures well but does not invent new objects, so a person cut off at the edge will not get their missing arm back.

How do I extend the background of a photo?

Choose how much to add on each side and the AI fills the new area by continuing what is at the edges. It works best on simple surroundings such as sky, sea, sand, grass or walls. For an exact banner or cover size, the Banner Extender does the same thing to a fixed width and height.

How do I turn a vertical photo into a horizontal one?

Extend the left and right sides until the photo reaches the landscape shape you need, for example 16:9 for YouTube or a slideshow. If the background is busy, a blurred background from No Crop can look cleaner than AI fill.

Is AI uncrop free?

Yes, with no watermark or account. The AI model (about 27 MB) downloads once and then runs on your own device, so there is no cost per image and no limit.
