AI Color Pop: what it does and when to use it
AI Color Pop keeps the subject of a photo in full colour and turns everything behind it black and white, the selective-colour look of a red bus on a grey street or a child in a bright coat. An AI model finds the subject, so you do not have to paint around it by hand.
The subject is cut out on your device with MODNet or BiRefNet-lite, and the background is redrawn in black and white, black and white with a blur, a darker black and white, sepia or faded colour. Subject colour can be left as it is or made a little richer so it stands out more. Everything is at the photo's full resolution.
This works on the main subject the model finds. To keep one colour wherever it appears, such as every red thing in the frame, use the Color Splash Effect instead, which picks by colour rather than by subject. To blur the background but keep its colours, use Portrait Blur.
AI Color Pop: frequently asked questions
How do I make the background black and white but keep the subject in colour?
Drop the photo in and press Pop the colour. An AI model finds the subject, keeps it in colour and redraws the background in black and white. You can also choose a blurred, darker, sepia or faded background.
What is the difference from Color Splash?
Color Pop keeps a subject in colour, wherever its colours are. Color Splash keeps one colour wherever it appears in the photo, subject or not.
Does it work with several people or objects?
It keeps whatever the model sees as the main subject, which is often a group standing together. Things far apart from the main subject may go grey with the background.
Can I choose which part stays in colour?
Not here: the AI picks the main subject. To choose by hand, paint over a black-and-white copy with the Brush, Eraser & Fill tool, or keep a colour with Color Splash.
