AI Smart Crop: how to use it
- Drop in a photo.
- Choose the shape, how much room to leave and where the subject sits.
- Press Crop to the subject and download.
Tips
- On a third gives a more natural landscape crop; Centred suits products and profile pictures.
- If part of the subject is cut off, choose a shape closer to the subject's own (tall for a standing person, wide for a car), or Tight around the subject.
AI Smart Crop: what it does and when to use it
AI Smart Crop finds the subject of a photo and crops around it for you, at the shape you need: a 1:1 square for a profile or a marketplace, 4:5 for an Instagram post, 9:16 for a story or reel, 16:9 for a video thumbnail, or tight around the subject. It saves the fiddly part of cropping by hand, especially when the subject is off to one side.
A matting model, the same one the Background Remover uses, works out which pixels belong to the subject, on your own device. The crop is then placed around it with the amount of room you choose, centred or on a third for a more natural composition. The pixels are your original's; nothing is resized or redrawn.
If the subject is too big for the chosen shape, the tool says so rather than cutting it off silently; choose a shape closer to the subject's own, or Tight around the subject. For a crop you control yourself, with exact sizes and rotation, use the Image Cropper. To fill a fixed shape without cropping anything, the No Crop tool puts the whole photo on a blurred background.
AI Smart Crop: frequently asked questions
How do I crop a photo around the subject automatically?
Drop it in, choose a shape such as 1:1 or 9:16 and press Crop to the subject. An AI model finds the subject and the crop is placed around it with the room you chose.
Does it lower the quality?
No. It crops the original pixels and does not resize them, so the crop is as sharp as the photo. Free downloads of AI results are standard size; the full-size file is an HD download.
What if the subject does not fit the shape?
The tool tells you, and keeps as much of the subject as the shape allows. Choose a shape closer to the subject's own, tall for a standing person and wide for a car, or Tight around the subject, which crops to the subject's own shape.
Which shape should I use for Instagram?
4:5 for a post (1080 × 1350 shows largest in the feed), 9:16 for stories and reels, and 1:1 for a profile picture. Related guide: Image sizes for every social platform.
