Image Blur: how to use it

  1. Drop in an image.
  2. Choose the Blur type: Gaussian (soft all over), Motion (streaks in one direction) or Radial / zoom.
  3. Set the Strength, and the Angle for motion blur. Tick Keep the centre sharp and set the Sharp area size for a tilt-shift or focus effect.

Tips

  • To blur the background behind a person automatically, use Portrait Blur.
  • Blur is not a safe way to hide text; use a solid box in the censor tool.

Image Blur: what it does and when to use it

The Image Blur tool offers three kinds of blur. Gaussian blur softens everything evenly, which is how you make a busy background calm behind text or blur a whole screenshot. Motion blur smears the picture in one direction to suggest speed. Radial, or zoom, blur streaks outwards from the centre, as if the camera zoomed during the exposure.

Keep the centre sharp turns any of them into a focus effect: the middle stays crisp and blur increases towards the edges. With a narrow sharp band this becomes a tilt-shift look that makes real scenes look like miniature models, especially when photographed from above.

Blur is not a safe way to hide sensitive text such as passwords, account numbers or addresses, because light blur can sometimes be read or partly reversed. Use Pixelate & Censor with a solid box, or crop the information out. To blur only the background behind a person automatically, use Portrait Blur.

Image Blur: frequently asked questions

Is the Image Blur free, and do I need to sign up?

Yes, the Image Blur is 100% free with no sign-up, no login and no account. The Image Blur runs in your browser, so it has no daily limit and no upload, and saves at full size with no watermark. See why it is free.

How do I blur a face or a number plate in a photo?

Blur or pixelate only that area. For hiding information, the Pixelate and Censor tool is safer: strong pixelation cannot be undone, while a light blur on text can sometimes be partly read.

How do I blur the background of a photo?

For a portrait-mode look where the subject stays sharp, use Portrait Blur, which finds the subject with AI. This tool blurs the whole frame or its edges, which suits a soft, dreamy look or a background image for text.

What is motion blur used for?

It adds a sense of speed, as if the camera or subject moved during the shot. Set the angle to match the direction of movement. Related tool: Image Sharpener.
