Image Adjustments: how to use it

  1. Drop in your photo.
  2. Start with Exposure for overall brightness, then Highlights and Shadows to recover detail at each end.
  3. Fix colour with Temperature and Tint, then fine-tune Contrast, Saturation or Vibrance. Download when it looks right.

Tips

  • Vibrance boosts dull colours more than already-strong ones, so skin tones stay natural. It is usually a better choice than Saturation.
  • If white things look blue or yellow, move Temperature the opposite way until they look neutral.
  • For exact control of the black and white points, use Levels and Curves.

Image Adjustments: what it does and when to use it

Image Adjustments collects the corrections almost every photo benefits from on one panel: exposure for overall brightness, highlights and shadows to recover detail at either end, temperature and tint for colour casts, and contrast, saturation, vibrance and gamma for the finishing touches. Every slider previews live on your own photo, at full resolution when you download.

Order matters. Fix brightness first, because every colour judgement depends on it. Then correct the colour cast: indoor light under bulbs tends to make photos orange, shade and overcast days make them blue, and moving Temperature the opposite way neutralises it. Vibrance is the gentler cousin of saturation: it boosts muted colours more than ones that are already strong, so skin tones do not turn orange.

Adjustments cannot bring back detail that is completely black or completely white in the file; a histogram shows whether that has happened, and the Histogram Viewer will tell you. For precise control of black and white points, Levels & Curves is the more exact tool. For one-tap looks rather than corrections, try Image Filters.

Image Adjustments: frequently asked questions

How do I brighten a dark photo?

Raise Exposure or Brightness until the subject looks right, then add a little Contrast back so the photo does not look washed out. For more control over shadows and highlights separately, use Levels and Curves.

How do I fix the colour of a photo that looks too yellow or blue?

Move the white balance (warmth) slider the opposite way: cooler for yellow indoor photos, warmer for blue shade or overcast photos. Something that should be white or grey in the photo is the best guide. Related guide: JPG vs PNG vs WebP vs AVIF: which should you use?.

Can I edit photos online without losing quality?

Yes. Adjustments are applied once at full resolution, and PNG saves them without any compression loss. Saving as JPEG at high quality is visually the same for photos and far smaller.
