Image Splitter: how to use it

  1. Drop in the image to split.
  2. Set the number of Columns and Rows.
  3. Download the tiles as a zip. They are numbered in reading order.

Tips

  • A 3 × 1 split makes a panorama you can post as three connected Instagram posts; 3 × 3 makes a grid of nine.
  • Every tile comes out exactly the same size. If the image does not divide evenly, the leftover pixels at the right and bottom edges are dropped.
  • For the upload order, tile shapes and printing across sheets, read How to split an image into equal parts.

Image Splitter: what it does and when to use it

The Image Splitter cuts one picture into an even grid of tiles, such as 3 × 1 or 3 × 3, and downloads them as a zip numbered in reading order: left to right, top to bottom. It is how people make a panorama that scrolls across three Instagram posts, or a grid that forms one large image on a profile page.

For Instagram grids, remember that posts appear newest first, so the last tile in reading order must be posted first. If the width does not divide evenly by the number of columns, the spare pixels at the edge are dropped so that every tile matches, and a 4:5 or 1:1 tile suits how Instagram shows posts. Our guide to splitting an image has the sizes.

Splitting is also useful for printing a large image across several sheets of paper, or cutting a sprite sheet into separate images. To join images rather than split one, use the Photo Collage Maker or the Panorama Stitcher.

How do I split an image into a grid for Instagram?

Choose the rows and columns, for example 1 by 3 for a swipeable panorama or 3 by 3 for a grid post, and download every tile in order in one zip. Post the tiles in reverse order on a grid so they line up. Related guide: Image sizes for every social platform.

How do I cut an image into equal parts?
