Pop Art Maker: how to use it

  1. Drop in a photo with a clear subject.
  2. Choose the layout, Flat colour or Comic dots, and the detail.
  3. Download the pop art as PNG.

Tips

  • Remove a busy background first with the Background Remover for cleaner panels.
  • Fewer tones (Detail 2 or 3) look the most like a real screen print.

Pop Art Maker: what it does and when to use it

Pop Art Maker turns a photo into 1960s pop art: the same picture repeated in bright, flat screen-print colours like Andy Warhol's famous portraits, or a single panel in black Ben-Day dots like a Roy Lichtenstein comic. Choose a 2×2 or 3×3 grid, a 1×4 strip or one picture, and the number of tones in each panel.

Each panel maps the photo's light and dark to four flat inks from a different palette, which is how a silkscreen print works: the darkest areas take the deepest ink, the brightest the palest. Comic dots adds round halftone dots over the lighter tones, bigger where the picture is darker. It is a filter rather than an AI model, so it is instant and the result is always your own photo.

High-contrast photos with a clear subject, such as a face, a pet, a car or a bottle on a plain background, give the strongest pop art. Use your own photo or one you have the right to use. To print a poster, download as PNG; for the effect on one panel without the grid, choose One picture. For two colours only, try the Duotone Effect.

Pop Art Maker: frequently asked questions

How do I make Andy Warhol style pop art from a photo?

Drop the photo in and keep Layout on 2 × 2 grid and Style on Flat colour. Each panel gets a different set of four flat screen-print colours, like Warhol's Marilyn prints. Download as PNG.

How do I make Lichtenstein comic dots?

Choose Comic dots. Round black halftone dots are drawn over the lighter tones, bigger where the picture is darker, like a printed 1960s comic.

Can I use any photo?

Use your own photos, or ones you have permission to use. Turning someone else's photo into pop art does not make it yours to sell. Related tool: Duotone Effect.

What size should a pop art print be?

Download as PNG and print at up to about 30 cm (12 inches) per panel from a phone photo. Enlarge it first with the Image Upscaler for a bigger poster.
