Duotone Effect: how to use it

  1. Drop in a photo.
  2. Pick a colour pair, or choose My own colours and set the shadow and highlight colours.
  3. Adjust Contrast and Strength, then download.

Tips

  • Keep the shadow colour dark and the highlight colour light, or the picture loses its shape.
  • Use the same pair on a set of photos to make them look like one series.

Duotone Effect: what it does and when to use it

The Duotone Effect recolours a photo with just two colours: one for the shadows and one for the highlights, with every tone in between a blend of the two. It is the look of music posters, festival flyers, magazine covers and the Spotify campaigns, and it makes very different photos look like one set.

Pick a ready-made pair, from pink and navy or green and black to orange and teal, warm sepia or plain black and white, or choose any two colours of your own. Contrast decides how much of the picture goes to each end, and Strength blends the duotone with the original colours for a subtler tint. Everything happens in your browser at full resolution.

Photos with a strong shape and clear light and dark, such as a portrait, a city skyline or a product, make the boldest duotones. For brand work, use your brand colours with My own colours and keep the shadow colour dark. For flat, screen-printed panels in several colours, use the Pop Art Maker; for film looks, Colour Grading & LUTs.

Duotone Effect: frequently asked questions

How do I make a duotone image?

Drop the photo in and pick a colour pair, or choose your own shadow and highlight colours. The tool maps every tone in the photo between those two colours. Download as JPG or PNG.

How do I make a Spotify style duotone?

Choose Green and black, or set your own pair, such as a dark navy for shadows and a bright pink or yellow for highlights, and raise Contrast a little. Related tool: Colour Grading & LUTs.

What is the difference between duotone and a colour filter?

A filter tints the existing colours. A duotone throws the colours away and uses only the photo's light and dark, rebuilt from exactly two colours, which is why it looks so graphic. More help: ImgVX AI help docs.

Can I make a tritone?

Not here. For three or more flat colours, the Pop Art Maker maps the photo to four inks per panel.
