Stained Glass Effect: what it does and when to use it

The Stained Glass Effect turns a photo into a stained glass window: the picture is broken into hundreds of irregular pieces of coloured glass, each filled with the colour of the photo beneath it, held together by dark lead lines. Light glass shading makes each piece glow brighter in the middle, like glass with light behind it.

The pieces are Voronoi cells: points are scattered evenly over the image and every pixel belongs to the nearest one, which gives the organic, hand-cut shapes of real leaded glass. Pieces of glass sets how many there are, from a hundred bold panes to several thousand small ones, and you can change the width and colour of the lead.

Bold, colourful photos such as flowers, sunsets, birds and landscapes make the most striking windows. The result is a flat image, not a pattern for cutting glass, though it can be a starting point for a design. It runs on your device. For triangles instead of curved pieces, try Low Poly Art; for a mosaic of square tiles, Pixelate & Censor.

Stained Glass Effect: frequently asked questions

How do I turn a photo into stained glass?

Drop it in, choose how many pieces of glass you want and download. The photo is cut into irregular pieces, each in the photo's colour, separated by lead lines. Related tool: Low Poly Art.

Can I use it as a pattern for real stained glass?

As a starting point for a design, yes, but the pieces are not checked for cuttability, and real glass needs fewer, simpler shapes. Use 100 to 300 pieces and redraw the lines by hand. Related tool: Pop Art Maker.

Why do the lines look thin on my large photo?

Line width is measured relative to the picture. Raise Lead line width, or use fewer pieces, for a bolder window. More help: ImgVX AI help docs.

What colour should the lead be?

Near-black (the default) looks like real lead came. Gold or white lines make a lighter, decorative window. Related tool: Low Poly Art.
