Image Cropper: how to use it
- Drop in your image. A crop box appears over it.
- Pick an Aspect ratio, or leave it on Free, then drag the box and its corners to frame what you want to keep.
- Choose Save as and download. Only the area inside the box is kept.
Tips
- Common shapes: 1:1 for profile pictures and square posts, 4:5 for portrait Instagram posts, 16:9 for video thumbnails and 9:16 for stories. The aspect ratio guide covers the rest.
- Cropping removes pixels for good, which makes it the safest way to take something private out of a screenshot.
- If you need the whole photo in a square without cutting anything off, use Instagram No Crop instead.
Image Cropper: what it does and when to use it
Cropping keeps the part of the picture inside the box and discards the rest, without scaling what is left. That makes it the right tool whenever composition or shape is the problem: a profile picture that needs to be square, a photo with a stranger at the edge, or a screenshot that shows more than you meant to share.
Pick an aspect ratio and the box keeps that shape while you drag it and its corners, so you cannot accidentally end up with 1:1.03. The common ratios are 1:1 for avatars and square posts, 4:5 for portrait Instagram posts, 16:9 for video thumbnails and widescreen, and 9:16 for stories and reels. When a preset names an exact pixel size, the cropped area is also scaled to exactly that size on export.
Because the cut-away pixels are gone from the downloaded file, cropping is a safer way to remove private information than drawing a box over it. What cropping cannot do is fit a whole photo into a different shape: for that, add space around it with Instagram No Crop or the Canvas & Border tool.
Image Cropper: frequently asked questions
Does cropping reduce the file size?
Yes, because there are fewer pixels to store. A crop that keeps half the area will usually produce a file somewhere near half the size, though the exact figure depends on how detailed the part you kept is. Related guide: Aspect ratios explained: crop, pad or stretch?.
How do I crop to an exact aspect ratio?
Pick a ratio and the selection locks to it: dragging any handle keeps the shape, and dragging the box to an edge shrinks it rather than distorting it. The readout under the image shows the pixel size and the ratio of the current selection at all times. Related tool: Image Resizer.
How do I crop a picture into a circle?
Use the Avatar Maker, which crops to a circle and saves a PNG with transparent corners, ready for a profile picture. The cropper here makes rectangles and squares.
How do I crop an image to a square for Instagram?
Choose the 1:1 ratio, drag the box over the part you want to keep and download. If you would rather keep the whole photo, No Crop fits it inside a square with a blurred or coloured background instead.
